Antimicrobial and Ion-exchange Properties of Layered KHSi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> Compounds Prepared Using Amorphous Silicon Dioxide (a-SiO<sub>2</sub>) Blocks

A layered silicate, KHSi2O5, was synthesized via a hydrothermal method using an amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2) block, which is industrial waste. This silicate used as host compound for ion-exchange reactions with Ag+ and Cu2+ ions, the antibacterial properties of ion-exchanged compounds were investigated. The crystal structures retained during reaction; however, in case Cu2+, small amount Cu(OH)2 coexisted. M/Si (where M Ag or Cu) ratios 0.03 - 0.50 0.01 0.32 = Cu, respectively. activity analyzed by inhibition zone two standard model bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus,gram-positive) Escherichia coli (E. coli, gram-negative). Ag-KHSi2O5 Cu-KHSi2O5 samples showed good owing to release ions from their silicates. Here, each sample compared relative calculated based on bacterial area. against S. higher than that E. whereas lower coli.
